Jack B. ReVelle, Ph.D.

Dr. Jack B ReVelle provides his advice and assistance as a consulting statistician to a broad variety of manufacturing, service and residential construction organizations throughout North America, Europe, Australia, and China. In this capacity, he helps his clients to locate and significantly reduce their process pain. This pain includes excess cycle time duration and variation, excess labor and material costs, excess defects in production and errors in administration, excess process complexity, insufficient process documentation and unacceptably low customer satisfaction scores. Better understanding and continuous improvement of his clients processes are accomplished through the use of a broad range of Lean Six Sigma-related tools, techniques and methods. These include, but are not limited to: business process mapping, statistical sampling, root cause analysis, strategic planning and development, quality function deployment, design of experiments, statistical process control, as well as integrated product and process development. Dr. ReVelle also provides his technical assistance as both a quality and an industrial engineering expert to attorneys involved in litigation.Dr. ReVelle was the FY2008 Chair of Orange County SCORE-114.

Previously, he was the Director of the Center for Process Improvement for GenCorp Aerojet in Azusa and Sacramento, CA where he provided technical leadership for the Operational Excellence program. This included support for all Six Sigma, Lean/Agile Enterprise, Supply Chain Management, and High Performance Workplace activities. Prior to this, he was the Leader of Continuous Improvement for Raytheon (formerly Hughes) Missile Systems Company in Tucson, AZ. During this period, he established and led the Hughes team that won the 1994 Arizona Pioneer Award for Quality and the 1997 Arizona Governor's Award for Quality. He also established the Hughes team responsible for obtaining ISO 9001 registration in 1996.

Dr. ReVelle's previous assignments with Hughes Electronics were at the Corporate Offices as the Chief Statistician (Director, Statistical and Process Improvement Methods) and Manager, Employee Opinion Research and Training Program Development. Prior to joining Hughes, he was the Founding Dean of the School of Business and Management at Chapman University in Orange, CA and Founding Chairman of the Decision Sciences Department at the University of Nebraska in Omaha, NE.

Dr. ReVelle has been a judge for the RIT - USA Today Quality Cup (1994-2000) and a member of the Board of Directors for the Arizona Governor's Awards for Quality (1999-2000). He was also a member of the Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (1990 & 1993), a judge for Arizona Governor's Awards for Quality (1994-1996), and a member of the Awards Council for the California Governor's Award for Quality (1998-1999).

Following publication of his books, Quantitative Methods for Managerial Decisions (1978) and Safety Training Methods (1980, Revised 1995), Dr. ReVelle authored chapters for inclusion in the Handbook of Mechanical Engineering (1986, Revised 1998, and 2006), the Production HandbookHandbook of Occupational Safety and Health (1987), the Quality Engineering Handbook (1991) and From Concept to Customer - The Practical Guide to Integrating Product & Process Development and Business Process Reengineering (1995). His most recent texts are The QFD Handbook (1998), What Your Quality Guru Never Told You (2000), the Manufacturing Handbook of Best PracticesQuality Essentials: A Reference Guide from A to Z (2004) [republished in Russian in 2005], and the Home Builder's Guide to Continuous Improvement  Schedule, Quality, Customer Satisfaction, Cost, and Safety (2010). Dr. ReVelle also led the development of two innovative, expert-system software packages, TQM ToolSchool (1995) and QFD/Pathway (1998).

Dr. ReVelle has been inducted into the Purdue University ROTC Hall of Fame (2006) and was awarded the Oklahoma State UniversityLohmann Medal (2006). He is a three-time Fellow having been elected by: the Institute of Industrial Engineers (1993), the American Society for Quality (1992), and the Institute for the Advancement of Engineering (1987). He is listed in Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, and as an Outstanding Educator in The International Who's Who in Quality.

Dr. ReVelle is a 1990 recipient of the Distinguished Economics Development Programs Award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, a 1991 recipient of the Taguchi Recognition Award from the American Supplier Institute, a 1999 recipient of the Akao Prize from the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) Institute, and a 1999 recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Award from The National Graduate School of Quality Management.?? He is one of only two persons in the world who has been honored to receive both the Taguchi Recognition Award for his successful application of Robust Design and the Akao Prize for his outstanding contribution to the advancement of QFD.

His award-winning articles have been published in Quality Progress, Industrial Engineering, Industrial Management, Professional Safety and Plant Engineering magazines. During 1994 and 1995, Dr. ReVelle created, produced, directed, and hosted a series of monthly satellite telecasts, Continuous Improvement Television (CITV), for the National Technological University. His on-air guests included some of the best known and most highly-regarded quality leaders in the United States.

During the Summer of 2010 Dr. ReVelle recorded a series of nearly 50 ASQ (American Society for Quality) webinars / webcasts (15 hours) on the essential quality tools including the 7-Quality Control Tools, the 7-Management and Planning Tools, the 7-Supplemental Tools, the 7-Team Support Tools, the 7-Creativity Tools, the 7-Lean Six Sigma Tools, and the Variability Reduction Process (Kano Model, Voice of the Customer Table, Quality Function Deployment, Robust Design of Experiments, and Statistical Process Control).

He received his B.S. (1957) in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University, and both his M.S. (1965) and Ph.D. (1970) in Industrial Engineering and Management from Oklahoma State University. Prior to receiving his Ph.D., he served 12 years in the U.S. Air Force. During that time, he was promoted to the rank of Major and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal while stationed in the Republic of Vietnam as well as the Joint Service Commendation Medal for his work in quality assurance with the Defense Nuclear Agency.

Currently, Dr. ReVelle is a member of the CEAT (College of Engineering, Architecture, and Technology) Board of Associates at Oklahoma State University (OSU). He is formerly a Senior Vice President, the Treasurer, and a Regional Vice President of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE), the Director of the Aerospace and Defense Division of the IIE, a Co-Chair of the Total Quality Management (TQM) Committee of the American Society for Quality (ASQ), and a Member of the Board of Directors of the Association for Quality and Participation (AQP).

Other professional memberships include the American Statistical Association (ASA) and the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE). Dr. ReVelle's national honor society memberships include: Sigma Tau (all-engineering), Alpha Pi Mu (industrial engineering), Alpha Iota Delta (decision sciences), and Beta Gamma Sigma (business administration).

ASQ to Award Dorian Shainin Medal to Dr. ReVelle:

The Dorian Shainin Medal is awarded annually by the American Society for Quality (ASQ) for the development and application of creative or unique statistical approaches in the solving of problems relative to the quality of products or services. On May 20, 2012 it will be presented to Dr. Jack B. ReVelle of Orange, CA at the ASQ World Conference on Quality and Improvement.

The citation to appear on Dr. ReVelle’s certificate will read: “Dr. ReVelle has trained, counseled and assisted home builders and their trade contractors by introducing the application of statistical techniques such as Lean Six Sigma and Total Quality Management (TQM) to solve residential construction-oriented problems related to home building products and home buyer services.”
