Working with TASA (the Technical Advisory Service for Attorneys) and the Los Angeles County Bar Association for over 10 years, Dr. Jack B. ReVelle has provided his technical assistance as a statistician as well as both a quality and an industrial engineering expert to attorneys involved in litigation. His record of technical support to the legal profession includes cases involving product liability / personal injury, data analysis, and statistical sampling.
The product liability / personal injury cases Dr. ReVelle worked on ranged from an exploding can containing compressed gas (used as a duster for electronic equipment) to premature activation of a front passenger seat air bag. There were extensive personal injuries in both these cases.
The data analysis cases included misinterpretation and misrepresentation of financial data, differing opinions between manufacturers and purchasers regarding product defect rates, and class action suits that dealt with availability of sufficient facilities to accommodate the handicapped as well as consistency of treatment of hourly vs. salaried employees.
The sampling cases involved situations where statistical significance was required so as to make decisions which could not be easily challenged in court, e.g., inventory and personnel head counts. In one case Dr. ReVelle provided his expertise in support for the California Franchise Tax Board through the Assistant Attorney General of the State of California.
